Study in Red and White, Beijing, China, 2004

In the snows of winter, Beijing appears to be dressed in red and white, colors that contrast purity and passion. In this landscape, we see a city that is all dressed up with charm and vitality in this frozen, lifeless season.

As you say Jen, it is like a monochrome photo that sudently is broken by the strong read colour, It does give a certain sence of life but hardshift for the time it is of the year. The contrast with this first bush and some of the trees withoutleaves right beside a building that is alife thogh sleepeng contrasts that is true, I also like how the wall carries us throe the picture this bush at first plan gives us the harsh seson and then sudently my eyes go down the wall up to the little building like an oasis between such coldness.

***What makes this picture work for me is the incongruity of the warm deep red color against the harsh gray cold of the fog and the snow. It is truly a landscape study in red and white. You layer this picture effectively as well, stressing the frozen sticks of that leafless bush in the foreground to break up the mass of snow, and lead us into the wall that flows deeply into the picture with a long leading line taking us to the building itself. You then embrace it with cold fog in the background. This is one of those pictures that is perfectly executed, but beyond the incongruous color clash, I think this image is more of a charming winterscape than expressive content in itself.

Yes, it gives me a sense of how Beijing "dresses up" in winter, and it does so with excellence in execution. But it does not activate my imagination to the degree a landscape should. In order to do that, you would have had to find a way to make it more abstract, and also find a way to imply human values as effectively as you did in perhaps your finest landscape ever, which was also made in Beijing -- Sad Winter Afternoon, athttp://www.pbase.com/angeleyes_zyl/image/38004034
