01.jpgKim Alexander, Andrew Neil, Elizabeth Jane (19??) |
02.jpg"To Dear Lily, X'mas 1915": Granddad George, middle brother Albert, Nana (Lily), older brother Jack. Probably Auntie Lou's kids scattered around.
Notes from Bill Brook: "... back r L to R my uncle tim, my unc. tom, my unc claude my dad was not in the photo but he was the oldest child. My g/uncle George Ullyatt (aka Cocky ) Brook, his brother John William Ullyatt Brook (my G/dad) G/ma Brook (Bartlett) Mary- Geo's daughter and John William Ullyatt aka (uncle Jonnie ) ( G/dads uncle ) .F/row L Dads sister Mollie and (bro ) Charles ..." IN CONTEXT, THE GIRL ON THE RIGHT IS GRANNIE, AND THE GIRL AT THE FRONT IS AUNTIE MOLLY. BEHIND MOLLY'S RIGHT SHOULDER IS MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER GEORGE ULLYAT BROOK |
03.jpgNana & Grandad George Ullyat's wedding day in Midsummer Norton, after Boer War before they went to Aldershot where Grannie was born |
04.jpgNana & Granddad's wedding, taken at Auntie Molly & Uncle Jack's sandpit (the sand at the front?). Probably Auntie Lou at the far right, and Uncle Jack at the back with the mutton-chops. |
05.jpg"The Pig and Whistle" mess in South Africa during Boer War. Granddad was a member of the "Buffs", a nickname for men in the Kentish (and other county) Yeomanry Regiments. It referred to Buffalos possibly, as a result of their prior service in Africa. |
06.jpgMum & Dad on their wedding day, 22nd July 1946, All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. Reception at the NAAFI, Gropi Square. |
07.jpgNanna, baby Mum, Granddad (my great-grandfather), Grannie's 1st husband (my maternal grandfather), Grannie (1921?) in Midsummer Norton, Somerset where Mum was born |
 08.jpgMum, as a WAAF (194?)
Kim adds: Georgina Mary Hazel June Whittock as a lowly ranker in the Womens Royal Air Force (WRAF). Probably around 1943~4 and still UK based as not wearing tropical kit. |
 09.jpgKim, Andrew, Mum (1953?) |
 10.jpgMum, Dad, Kim, Andrew & Liz, Singapore (1957-1959) |
 11.jpg"Cub" Andrew in Singapore (1957-1959) |
12.jpgKim, Nana & baby Andrew at Fairoaks (?)
Kim adds: You, me & Nana in Spring or early summer 1952 in front of number 14/11, ??? Road, RAF Watton, nr Norwich. This was sergeant’s quarters as it was just before Dad got his Q-Commission and went of to Malaya to work with the SAS in raking the CTs out of the forest. I’m 4½ years and I can thank my lucky stars that I didn’t turn out gay! Granddad must have already died and Nana lived for another ~10 years. |
13.jpgGranddad & Nana (Lily Jane Bartlett) + Alex's dog Bonnie who was taken every day to the British Legion
Kim adds: Nana and Granddad late 40s or early 50s at the back of the house in Mortimers Lane (B3037), Fair Oak, nr Eastleigh, Hants. Behind them is the smallholding at the back of the property. I went there about 10 years ago and it was not the huge old place I’d always remembered. It was a semi and the date on the wall was early 1900s. |
 14.jpgLooks older than 1927
Kim adds: I think the little boy is our own Dad and the lady behind the little girl might be Grandma. In which case the other lady might be Aunty Naomi. But that’s all conjecture. If it’s Dad aged around 6 then the date is 1927. |
 15.jpgGranddad Leslie |
16.jpgGrandma Olga and Granddad Leslie, Romford back garden in the 1950s sometime |

 21.jpgAndrew, Liz & Kim, Singapore, August 1959 |
 22.jpgKim & baby Andrew, 1952? |
23.jpgGranddad George Ullyat Brook, probably a little while before his death in 1952 of cancer of the throat. He weighed 4 stone when he died and lived on alcohol for the last few years of his life (truth or myth?)
Kim adds: Granddad, probably near the end as he doesn’t look that good, in the smallholding at Mortimers Lane. He died 23rd March 1952 aged 81 (so born 1871) of throat cancer. Note that he still had the quiff which he’d always been very proud of. |
24.jpgAndrew Mitchell - R.A.F. Cosford, nr Dudley, West Midlands. Probably around 1957 outside newly commissioned Flying Officer D. L. Mitchell's first officers quarter. |
 25.jpg |
26.jpgNana and Andrew. She's has on one of the wrap-around "pinnies" she always used to wear.
Kim adds: Nana & me probably in front of Grannie’s place in Stoney Lane, Winchester (because we didn’t move to Watton till I was a bit older & anyway there was no fences at the front in Watton; and Nana’s place in Fair Oak had fields opposite). What is Nana holding in her right hand? Looks like the end of someone’s dick!!! Judging by the plants and trees it’s full summer so I guess I’m 20-ish months old and it’s July/August 1949. |
27.jpgDad. sometime in the early 20s. Great knees! |

 31.jpg |
 32.jpgGrannie with Mum
Kim adds: Grannie holding Mum for a christening photograph perhaps in a studio (see curtain behind – though perhaps not with stairs in bottom left corner. This would have been in July/Aug/Sept 1923 as baby is able to support own head; so Mum 3 or 4 months old (born 2/6/23) and Grannie still only 18 years old as she was born 2nd October 1904. |
33.jpgMum & Alex with Janey on St Catherine's Hill, Winchester
Kim adds: Alex, Mum, me seated at front. Not sure if toddler is you or other lady is Grannie – doesn’t look like her nor does it look like Auntie Janie nor Jeremy. Wonder who photographer was; Dad? I must be around 6, so summer 1954? |
34.jpgGeorge Ullyat Brook (Grannie's dad), my maternal great-grandfather. Our 2 sons are named after him; one is Lewes Ullyat, the other is Liam George (George was also my paternal great-grandfather's name)
Kim adds: Granddad’s grave in the cemetery on the outskirts of Fair Oak. I went there in August 2000 and somehow found the grave within about ½hr. It’s got Nana in plus extra words and is in a bit of a sorry state. I meant to return and clean it up but haven’t yet. The headstone and surround are laying over a good bit because the stacked coffins beneath have rotted and collapsed.

38.jpgLiz, Kim, Andrew during "Rose Cottage" (Dorset?) holiday. Best fish I ever ate!
Kim adds: This is Andrew on the beach at Charmouth, near Lyme Regis, West Dorset in August 1964 following a successful mackerel fishing boat trip. Note our pet beagle in the background, as ever, on the prowl for carrion. |

 45.jpgKim & Andrew at Wells-next-the-Sea
Kim adds: Me wearing Dad’s cast off itchy RAF uniform even to the extent of wearing a tie, you looking hysterical. Probably on the seafront at Brighton/Hove and probably by one of the professional photographers who with toys like this frequented the entrances to the 2 piers; this would have been West Pier (not Palace Pier) which now lies derelict battered by a devastating fire then several wicked storms. Around Spring ’53 or ’54. |
