An unexpected opportunity to travel far afield came our way this summer, so instead of our usual & rather pedestrian East Coast summer vacation, AJ & I flew to Anchorage, Alaska, to serve as volunteers with a friend & colleague from the U.S. Geological Survey on a photographic survey of glaciers in Prince William Sound. Weather & boat availability issues actually worked in our favor for seeing things beyond the glaciers, such as Anchorage, Hatcher Pass, and Denali National Park. We even got to ride the 80+ year old Alaska Rail Road train from Denali back to Anchorage, which yieled magnificent vistas on the return journey.
