Originally a Benedictine monastery abbey, founded in 747. The abbey is now a Cathedral and it was reconstructed several times before the current Baroque church was completed in 1767. Now only the foundations and some architectural elements remain from the monastery. It was designated as a Unesco World Heritage site in 1983.

Paul Maassen Bronze Statue
He was a travelling merchant selling haberdashery out of his basket in Monschau & the Aachen area. Very popular with the Monschau women because he always had a nice tale to tell. They bought something from him, even if they did not really need anything at the time. He was born in 1856 and died aged 84 in 1940. This statue was installed in 2000.

Behind is the spire of St. Jacobi Church. The original medieval church was destroyed by bombing during World War II. It was rebuilt in 1963, in an unusual style featuring medieval design and a modern spire. Its organ is said to be the largest in Northern Europe.
