The top of these steps in Camara de Lobos was Winston Churchill's favourite spot to sit and enjoy his painting. He first stayed on the island in 1899, en route to South Africa to report on the Boer War when he was a journalist. He returned for a year in 1949 before returning to England to win another general election in 1950
