From Walton Heath, Surrey, this simple fenced enclosure originally stood on the current site the M25 motorway.
Stray animals in the pounds couuld be retrieved by their owners on payment of a fine, but became the property of the lord of the manor if unclaimed after a certain period of time, often twelve months.Pounds were either stone-walled enclosures or, like this one, were simple post and rail fences. No longer in use, the simpler ones quickly decayed and disappeared, their positions known only from early maps.
This one is only late 19th century, and was dismantled and then re-constructed at Singleton in 1983.
