This 11 metres tall column marks the site of the battlefield near the small village of St Julien. Here 18,000 Canadians withstood the first German gas attacks from the 22nd -24th April 1915. 2,000 fell and lie buried nearby and this location then became known as Vancouver Corner. The memorial was erected in 1923.
