Patented in 1912, before dashboard mounted engine temperature became standard, it was necessary to measure the temperature of the water vapour from the engine cooling system. This mercury based thermometer was mounted on many cars onto the radiator at the front of the engine. Elegant and practical they however gave way to bonnet ornaments still fashionable one hundred years later.
