over a barrel

I was anticipating Chico to jump over this barrel, focus locked on the barrel, and when Chico entered the frame I finished pressing the shutter release. The barrel is in just okay focus, but I am terribly unhappy with how Chico looks. Suggestions on how to make him more sharp are certainly welcomed.

I agree- faster shutter speed needed- the problem-i'm guessing here-
could have been due to the camera over exposing for the
darker tone of the barrel? If so, it would slow
the spped down even fractionally, which at iso 64
would mean blur or unsharp.

I think I have to agree with Mel a little blur shows movement! I've been known to add blur just for that reason.I like it It's Great shot!

While Chico is not razor sharp, one would not expect him to be. The slight blur makes the photo more dramatic and alive. Others may differ, but that is my take.

It does show motion nicely though. Panning is another way to capture this type photo, gotta allow for shutter delay.

He's not sharp because the shutter speed is too slow. Moving ubjects that are perpendicular to the lens (90 degree angle) are the hardest to stop. If you change to a 45 degree angle you'll get better results but the picture might not have enough impact. If your camera has a manual mode with shutter priority, raise the ISO and use at least 1/500 of a second if you can. Higher would be even better...but you'll have to experiment to see what works best.

Gotta love that leap anyway. Impressive creature.
