One of the most iconic of all medieval cathedrals, the early parts of Chartres (crypt, towers and base of West front) date from the eleventh and early twelth centuries. The main part of the cathedral was started after a fire in 1194 and, in the main, finished twenty-five years later. The North and South porches were added in the second half of the 13th century. Famed for its proportions, its stained glass and thousands of sculpted figures, Chartres is in the top echelon of Gothic Cathedrals.
