Kolberg, located on the south coast of the Baltic Sea, was part of the Middle Pomeranian province in Germany from 1815 to 1945. Largely destroyed in World War II, it is now located in Poland and is called Kołobrzeg. It is today, as it was in 1922, a popular beach resort among both Germans and Poles. My mother is shown here playing catch with a young girl on the beach. It is the only picture I’ve ever seen of her with pigtails.
