Unlike 2314, this one WAS a little more elaborately staged.
I believe that these are black swans. (I'm not an ornithologist, but they look right for the species and I know that black swans are found in the region.)
I saw a pair of them paddling their way down the lake. And so I pointed the 40D to where I expected them to pass me on the part of the lake which had been lit reddish-orange by the rising sun, set the focus to that point with a shallow DOF, and waited.
Man, those little black ducks... er, swans... must have some awesome cold-resistance...
