080705_175436_2254 New Moon, Parliament House (Sat 05 Jul 08)

New Parliament House, Capital Hill, Canberra ACT Australia

The title says it all.

-----
Edit, 10 August 2024: Yes, the title does say it all, but could probably still do with some elaboration.

Pointing up toward the moon is the very recognisable (to Australians, at least) Australian National Flag. It flies over the centre of Parliament House 24 hours a day. The flag itself is 12.8m by 6.4m in size, and the mast is 81m (266 feet) high.

I'm at a loss as to where I took this shot from. At the time I was staying at the Hotel Realm on National Circuit, which is about 780 metres to the south east of Parliament House. The Parliament House building is roughly rectangular in layout (albeit with concave curved walls on the upper stories) with the main entrance facing roughly north east.

I had shot some photos at the Realm a mere 9 minutes before I took this shot. On foot, on a cold winter night, most likely with a heavy tripod I probably wasn't able to cover that much distance, so I was probably still somewhere near the Realm.

Since I seem to be shooting the building square-on (note also the positions of the four legs of the mast), I'm most likely shooting toward the south-east facing side of the building. (Which is the House Of Representatives side of the building, if you're interested.)

The most likely location would seem to be down Sydney Avenue, about 100m south west of the Realm which offers a line of sight straight into Parliament House. Except... I can't see anywhere on that avenue which lines up with a No Entry sign, or the buildings that are on the right of the uncropped shot.

Let this be a lesson, boys and girls... do your metadata input religiously. Don't assume that you'll remember where you took a shot more than 16 years... yes, SIXTEEN {facepalm, sigh...} after you took it.
