Originally the only image I posted of this cell was 13187, following. I know why, of course... because the subject is the ball and chain, which can't be seen very clearly here as it is hidden by the bars. But in 13187 you can't see the "prisoner" clearly to put the wearing of one of those things in context.

I grant you that this is not the most lifelike prisoner I've ever seen. (Though that's not the fault of the model maker; I can believe that the prisoners were dirty but you rarely see real people who are dusty.) But leave that aside for a moment and visualise this as an actual person.

I can think of some who would deserve this treatment. But given the state of the criminal "justice" system at the time... you can bet that there were more who didn't.
