Sunday. The perfect day to drive to a coastal cafe for breakfast.
The sun, still low in the sky, is just starting to cast some warm light over the ocean and through the cafe's windows.
Yet there are differences between the scene now, and as it would have been a year ago.
First, the heavy and wide desk separates the bar from the customers for social distancing. Second, the now-ubiquitous huge bottle of handwash sits on that desk, casting almost as long a shadow as the virus itself.
Third, there is a register on a clipboard. Everyone who goes to the cafe needs to fill in their name and phone number to allow contact tracing, unless they booked on line.
I liked this world better without Coronavirus in it.
