160904_173118_0144 I've Missed You, My Friend (Sun 04 Sep 16)

The Pantheon, Roma, Lazio, Italia

The truth is that this wasn't built by my old friend Marcus Agrippa, but rather by the emperor Hadrian. However Agrippa had built the earlier building that sat on this site, and Hadrian honoured his memory by putting Agrippa's name on the front of it.

So pleased was I to finally arrive here that I dropped the lens cap fisheye lens onto the Olympus and had the surrounding buildings visually cradle the thing for emphasis.

I was a bit annoyed when I looked at today's shots as I found that the first half of the day appeared to be missing. At first I couldn't remember why. Then I recalled, and again cursed myself for not documenting it. Of course, I knew why I hadn't; it was hot and tiring and I was over having to lug the Olympus around. Hmm, actually I probably can't blame myself for that but it does mean that I need to better learn to use my phone camera for those times, much as I dislike phone photography. And indeed I did use it briefly in the morning as it turned out.

After a solid two weeks on the road we really had need of a laundry stop. There was a coin operated laundry within walking distance of our hotel (for certain values of "walking distance") so our Sunday morning in Rome was spent hauling our laundry down there.

After that we packed our bags and said our final goodbyes to the few members of the package tour who were still at the hotel, looked wistfully at the noticeboard which announced the meeting time for a new group who were due to start the same tour as us that very evening, and waited for the owner of the apartment that I had rented to pick us up to take us over there.

On the drive over the owner pointed out some interesting places and offered to drive us over to Trastevere. (An offer that in retrospect I kinda wish that we had taken him up on, for we never did make it there.) However everyone was hot and tired and just wanted to decompress for a bit, so we declined. Is there anywhere to get lunch, we asked. Oh yes, many places down on the main street.

Uh, yeah, not so much on Sunday there isn't. Still, there was a small snack bar open a few blocks down, above the entrance to the Manzoni Metro station. We got a nice, light lunch there. Nope, no photos of that. We then went back to the apartment and settled in.

After that we headed to the Spanish Steps and on to other locations such as this one, had another dinner in the Piazza Navona and finally went to experience the Trevi Fountain at night.

On balance, it was a good if somewhat underutilised day. For me the highlight was a toss-up between this, and the pasta amatriciana that I had for dinner.

Fantastic fisheye. I like the crowd in the foreground. The scene is well framed by the distorted structures. Very well composed. V
