George St, Sydney CBD

George Street was the main thoroughfare through the city. Large chunks of it have currently been closed off to allow the construction of a light rail system through the city leading off to some of the south-eastern suburbs. These will replace buses. You know, those things that can actually drive around other vehicles if they break down the way light rail cars can't, and can be diverted onto other routes if need be, also like light rail vehicles can't.

It is a multi-billion dollar bad idea, though I may be biased from my own experience on the execrable existing light rail service. I recall that when that was being developed the service was promised every few minutes... if one counts every "few" as "maybe 10 minutes, maybe quarter of an hour, maybe 20 minutes, depends what we feel like". As a result you end up with light rail cars that make sardine cans look luxurious by comparison.

I hope I'm wrong about the new metro system but I shall be suitably surprised if I am.

One lane of George St has been left open for service vehicles and the like, and here we see the body cap fisheye lens looking down the path to that lane.

Buffalo (about 60 miles away) has a light rail system that closed some city streets. Some sections were taken out and the streets were re-opened. I don't think the ridership was very high. It's too bad they have ruin historical neighborhoods by building trolley lines.
This is superbly composed. The lines and perspective create a sense of movement. V

I have mixed feelings about light rail too. Houston has been adding segments, but none run very far out of the city. Mostly it offers an opportunity to take an air-conditioned ride from one side of town to the other. Good for pub crawling, but not much during the day. Some people use it to park in satellite lots, which are cheaper than downtown garages. Federal grant money for light rail was available and I think our city just wanted an excuse to use those funds. I like this stately old building. Lots of arches and domes. And your photo has nice perspective through the gates.
