160103_110941_0015 Goes Like A Bastid But Not In A Good Way (Sun 03 Jan 16)

At Home, Illawarra, NSW

From the highly recommended (not horror) Stephen King novel 11.22.63 that I've recently been re-reading, when a resident of the great state of Maine was discussing a 1954 Ford Sunliner complete with his regional accent:
"Oh, ayuh. And when you catch second, you want to watch out for the cops. She goes like a bastid in second. Want to take 'er out for a spin?"

This is obviously not a sturdily built Ford Sunliner. It is in fact my cheaply built but less cheaply priced Ryobi 36V line trimmer. Let me be clear, some of the other members of the Ryobi 36V range are awesome. The lawn mower is a wonder. The edger is OK. The chainsaw is a little ripper, no pun (maybe a little pun) intended. And the line trimmer was OK as long as you dumped the feeble Ryobi-supplied cord that could barely cut through butter without breaking and replaced it with something more robust but still within the motor's specs.

Except that as you can see, my line trimmer is now "going like a bastid", except in the other sense of the term. No, no, those are not the trimmer lines. Those are from an electrical cable that came down out of the motor when for some unknown reason it decided to dump its guts out of the motor housing, past the spinner and directly into the path of the trimmer line, which had enough momentum to commit an act of Seppuku. (Harakiri, if you prefer.)

So we may consider that motor to be stuffed. I'm sure that a sufficiently skilled electric motor mechanic could repair it, but probably at a cost greater than a new one.

Ah, about that.

You may or may not know that the AUD has slid in value pretty dramatically against the USD in the time since I bought this in late 2013 (so yes, this happened about 2.5 months after the 2 year warranty period expired). And many imports are denominated in USD, even if they don't come from the US. So what cost me $179 two and a bit years ago can now be replaced for... $249. Yeah, about 40% in 2 years, that sounds reasonable...

Nice DOF. The lens does great bokeh. Very sharp. V
I am sorry to hear that your weed trimmer has died. Spending money on stuff like that rather than on new camera equipment is no fun. Everything is more expensive now. Food and fuel has gone up astronomically, but wages haven't.
