In contrast to yesterday's black and white shot, I decided to utilise the extreme sunniness of the summer's day to produce a super-saturated shot of similar basic structure (branches against the sky), though not filling the screen this time to allow some emphasis of the bright, clear blue day.
Unfortunately this shows up the main limitation of the Olympus; in bright sunlight the monitor screen is almost impossible to see so you are largely guessing at the focal point. Also looking at it in PhotoShop the DOF is a little less than I would have liked. Nonetheless it achieved the contrast to yesterday's shot that I intended; colour vs mono, close vs far.
Speaking of which, those of you whose galleries I typically visit may have noticed an absence of comments from me lately. This is not at all because I'm ignoring any of you but rather for two reasons. First, because I'm tending to visit galleries in batches of days at the moment. (Generally speaking, at least; there's the occasional exception.) Originally this was a "time" thing (just as my periodic postings are), but I serendipitously discovered that it was often more interesting to follow a few days' worth of shots to see where you all are heading photographically, and doubly so for those who, like me, write a lot of commentary about the shots.
The second reason is a more transient one, which is that we've eaten through our broadband quota for the month (which runs until the 23rd) so we're throttled back to a slower speed until the billing month ticks over. Consequently browsing images is not currently a fast or pleasant task and indeed I'm wondering how long it'll take to load tonight's four up. PBase is as slow as the proverbial wet weekend at the moment (on our speed-throttled connection, that is; not the site itself), though with the heat we've been having of late (and Melbourne and Adelaide far more than us) a nice, cold, wet weekend would be more blissful than tedious. But I digress.
I shall, however return. I'm not that easy to get rid of.

Edit April 2025: Wow. Looking back 11 years there are many anachronisms to address. The first is of course that what I then referred to as "The Olympus" was the pocket E-P1 camera, not the later semi pro level mirrorless cameras.
Second, this was back in the days when Australia had what was contemptuously known as "Fraudband". Not that fast, expensive, and limited in capacity. Boy, I don't miss those days. I'd say that we take for granted fast and cheap internet access but because of the cack handed and half a$$ed way our National Broadband Network was implemented it is "fast enough for most", but not particularly cheap compared to many other countries as per an article that I was reading just last week.
Third, back then there were a significant number of people to follow on PBase. Now... there are a few.
I decided to leave the original description as it was for historical context, but in 2025 it is definitely more "historical" than "context".
