The surf was highly intermittent this afternoon at Coalcliff Beach, other images of which reside in my South of Sydney / Northern Illawarra gallery. For extended periods it would be relatively flat and benign, at other times you'd have substantial breakers, sometimes the size of the one shown, sometimes a bit larger.
All of them had expended their energy on the outer rocks of the rocky point to the south of the main Coalcliff Beach, meaning that this grandfather and grandson pair were pretty safe in enjoying the rock pools.
I'm sure that there are some who would complain that this is grossly irresponsible and there is always the possibility of some gigantic rogue wave sweeping them off and... yes there is, in some distant mathematical probability equation. But risk is part of life, and life without any risk is merely existence, and barely that. My bet is that they left the beach with only pleasant memories of having been there.
