The USCGC BERTHOLF, the Coast Guard's first Legend class cutter, visited the Port of Miami from June 18th thru the 21st, 2008, enroute to a visit to Baltimore, Maryland before sailing for her home port of Alameda, California where she will be commissioned on August 4, 2008.

The BERTHOLF's fabrication began September 9, 2004, the keel was laid on March 29, 2005, she was launched on September 29, 2006, and christened on November 11, 2006. The BERTHOLF is crewed by 112 with 14 Officers and is commanded by CAPT Patrick H. Stadt, USCG. Many thanks to Captain Stadt, his crew and his wife Michelle for their tour and hospitality during our visit on June 20th.

Perhaps you saw a photo of the cutter's commissioning ceremony or other special event where they put the name on the bow. But cutters normally do not have names on the bows. It is the same cutter and the USCG would never have the funds to replace cutters every five years, especially one of this class. Don .

Just stumbled on this website while looking for a picture of my great, great, great uncle's namesake, USCGC Bertholf. However, the first photo I have ever seen of the USCGC Bertholf had the name on the bow. None of these do. Can you explain the difference? Is this a different/newer ship than the first one that launched approximately five years ago? Any information you may be able to share is most appreciated. Thank you.

Don those are some good shots of this new ship, I was a BM1 onboard the CGC W44 Wachusett went to Viet Nam on her, we kept that old ship as white as could be, I see they have a little work to do on this new one, Thanks again for the photo's. J.R. Helms
