I live in So. Central Texas just outside of San Antonio. Yesterday, 6 Nov 2018, in the early morning I watched an all black with what I thought was a white necklace and a brownish tail hummingbird feeding. I did not have a camera with me. It was also compact. I have never seen this kind before. I searched many websites and could not find a match, even under migrating images.

I live in Southeastern Wisconsin, and I , too, saw a black hummingbird with a yellow collar I. June 11, 2014. Never saw it before. About the same size as the Ruby-throated; maybe a tad bigger. My "Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America" book does not mention this one; the only one that seems to be most like it is the "Magnificent Hummingbird " (eugenes fulgens). But that doesn't explain the yellow collar, and has any ever been spotted east of the Mississippi? Karen C, WI

I live in Michigan and two days ago my boyfriend told me of a black humminbird with a yellow collar we were standing here talking he looked over and before I could see it this awesome site was gone I have been gone alot but trying to watch to see if it comes back. So far no luck and besides this wesite I can not find any info on them they must be rare.

I live in mid-state Wisconsin and saw a hummingbird with a bright yellow collar at my feeder today about 5 pm. before I could get my camera turned on it was gone, still watching for it but it hasn't come back. I to would like to know what it's called. I love to watch hummingbirds they are my favorite bird.

Roger, I enjoyed your pictures of hummers. I live in upstate New York and yesterday morning (5/10/14) I saw what appears to be the same hummer that Barbie saw in Texas in 2012. As she noted this hummingbird was slightly smaller than a Ruby-throated hummer and its entire body was black. It was in the morning sun and did not appear to be iridescent. The yellow collar was quite prominent around the neck and perhaps 7 to 10 mm thick. This hummer had a rather short tail. If only I had my camera in hand at the time. He was gone in just a few seconds. I have never seen anything like it before.

I live in far-South Texas Rio Grande Valley. Yesterday I saw a Hummingbird in my yard that appeared to have a dark body, black head, and a very bright yellow collar. It was in the shade, so I don't know if it was iridescent. It was a smaller, more compact Hummingbird. The yellow contrasted against the black was impressive. What do you think? I've not seen this variety before. This is a first. I have lots of birds passing through, especially Hummingbirds. Sorry, too fleeting for a photo op. Thanks

Linda. It was probably one of the Trainbearers, most likely Black-tailed. Check the images on my Ecuadorian gallery and you´ll probably find what you saw. Roger

beautiful pictures, I Recently went to Peru and in a little town of Torata I took a picture of a beautiful long tailed hummingbird, I have not been able to identify what kind it is, do you have any suggestions of how to find out? Any help would be really appreciated, Thank you
