At approximately 4 AM on Sunday January 10th, Sturbridge Emergency Dispatch started receiving numerous calls for a fire being reported in one of the Publick House Motor Lodge buildings, located behind the Historic Publick House Inn on Main Street. On duty firefighters were alerted and immediately responded, taking less than three minutes to arrive on the scene. A 2nd alarm was struck as the on duty crew was dispatched. The three-man engine crew arrived to find a surreal scene. Nearly half of the entire length of the three-story wood frame structure, as well as 3 cars were engulfed in flames. Fire was overlapping from the ground floor level up to the balcony walkway of the second floor. Many of lodge’s rooms were at capacity due to several weddings that were held on the Publick House property over the weekend. Many of the guests of the building that was on fire had self-evacuated or helped other guests flee to safety. News reports stated that three people on the upper floor could not get out the front of the building due to rapid flame spread. These individuals were forced to retreat and exit at the back of their rooms, and were subsequently rescued by Sturbridge and Southbridge firefighters using ground ladders at the 3-story rear of the hotel. The 3rd alarm was struck shortly after arrival, summonsing additional help from several other neighboring fire departments. At around 5 AM, an additional alarm was struck for addition manpower, bringing in personnel to relieve firefighters already working the fire scene. A short time after that, some structural failures occurred to the lodge. All firefighters were withdrawn from the building and tactics were changed from offensive to defensive operations. The battle raged on for the next several hours with firefighters placing portable deck guns and large diameter handlines into operation at the front of the doomed hotel. By 8 AM firefighters had gained the upper hand, cautiously entering the building to perform overhaul operations. |
