Approximately 02:30 hrs on October 17th, Southbridge jakes received a call for a reported fire in a three story wood frame dwelling at 7 Pearl St. At the same time, they also received a call for a serious MVA involving 2 cars on Elm St. The on duty crew was dispatched to the building fire and mutual aid was requested for the MVA. Only one engine could be dispatched initially due to the fact that 2 on duty firefighters were on an ambulance that was transporting the patient to a Worcester hospital. The acting officer on the first due engine requested a third alarm before they even got on scene, due to the fact that he was short handed and had no aerial enroute on the still alarm. He could also see the glow in the sky while he was enroute from the station about a mile away. First due firefighters did a great job upon arrival. They made a rescue of a woman from a third floor window with the 24-foot ground ladder carried on the engine. Just a few minutes after the woman was rescued, the window that she was in lit up and fire pushed from it like a blowtorch. Southbridge firefighters received assistance on the scene from the Dudley and Charlton fire deparments, and the Sturbridge FD covered the Southbridge station. |
