The best source of general information about covered bridges is the National Society for the Protection of Covered Bridges. Visit their web site at www.CoveredBridgeSociety.org. There’s a wealth of information on the site, including a 24 page, freely downloadable “Introductory Guide to Covered Bridges” PDF – this is an excellent resource for general information about covered bridges.
On the NSPCB home page, scroll down a bit on the home page to the section titled “Covered Bridge Website”. That will take you to a site that enables access to the entire NSPCB database of authentic covered bridges. You must register with a valid email address to access the database, but there is no charge for basic access. NSPCB members receive some extra features, such as the ability to log bridge visits, and a trip planning feature. Members also gain access to the “Covered Bridge Guide” mobile app for both Android and iPhone devices. If you are a frequent “bridger”, I highly recommend joining NSPCB and installing the app!
GPS data for the bridges in this gallery comes from several different sources, in most case they will be accurate enough for you to locate the bridge. When planning a bridge visit, I recommend locating the bridge on Google Maps, and zooming in as far as possible with satellite view, to visually confirm there’s really a covered bridge at your entered GPS coordinates! Also, be aware that bridges are lost, primarily due to arson and severe weather, and some bridges on the NSPCB database are private and may not be visible without advance permission.
I became interested in photographing covered bridges in 2002. Photos in this gallery don't go back quite that far, but it's safe to say there are over 20 years of Covered Bridge photos here. My photographic skills have improved enough that I don't consider a lot of those old photos to be very good -- but I'll leave the old shots in place indefinitely, especially where I don't have any newer / better photos of those bridges.
I offer prints for some selected bridges on my web site, www.SkylandsPhotography.com. If you're interested in a photo of a bridge that appears on pbase, but doesn't appear on "Skylands", please let and I'll see what I can do for you.
