When I was at Masirah working in the Commcen on Middle watch (Middies) I used to go back to my billet after breakfast and find either Shiela (a desert gazelle) or Minnie a wee piard dog in my billet fast asleep and they hated the local `Gollies` who when the Oman taxman arrived to collect motorbike tax could not find any as the Arabs had buried their bikes in the sand.I bought a book on Masirah recently all about the RAF through the years but the Turtle and Camel Clubs didn't get a mention Pity! charlie carruthers here looking for any desert rescue team members 72 to 73 at masirah ? Also why were RAF personnel not included in the 1962 Campaign medal GSM for Dhofar as we served in Oman too and some of us were down at Salalah from time to time,and back up to operations too.

charlie carruthers comment to y4247144 Tony Walker Riyan near mukulla in the hadramaut is the raf station you are looking for.It was a stop over place for aircraft flying to Masirah from Aden where I was stationed 63 to 65.I also did a tour of 9 months at the commcen on Masirah and helped to run Radio 65 (Celtic Mixture) Monday nights with Tony read from Cork,Eire and piped my way round the island with my highland bagpipes.I was a new fledged telegraphist along with Jackie Melville and Nobby Shipperley all ex TPOs and some of the first non ex brat telegraphists in the RAF.

Memoriesas I am now 77 I was at RAF Masirah. in 1959 Good to see all the pictures after so many years . If anyone knew Cpl Taff Owen Communications Centre. It would be great to hear from anyone who was there in 1959 as most of the websites have information from 1970 onwards. I have great memoris of Mo who used to keep the train running and make our spears for our spear guns for fishing.. I have joined the RAF Masirah Salalah Veterians web site and awaiting a password. rgds Terry Owen

i served on masirah and salalah as a dog handler 75-76 and closed the dog section as the last ncoic,one of the best posting i had in 22 yrs.there were 2 wild dogs in the camp,not wild to us but the locals.one was a lurcher type the other corgi,with the help of certain dog handlers a pup was born and looked after by the guys from BIRS.anway happy memories.

Hi, I did my 12 months on the island during the mid-60's. I'm currently having a model made of the 'Whistling Tit'. It did the run from Aden up to us in Masirah, then later it went up to Bahrain. It was known as the RSM . Masirah being the end of the line, the S was Salalah but I can't remember the name of the R. I seem to think it may have been Riyhad or something like that. Any thoughts?
