An interesting bit of history. Do you know why these two 914-6 GT race cars incorporated the extra reinforcement from the roll bar hoop to the rear shock towers? Apparently, the story goes (from Paul Ernst Strahle), when the Strahle and the Seiller 914-6 GT cars raced at Monza in 1971, both were so quick during qualifying, they pissed off the Italians, so the race officials insisted on the two 914's to be fitted with a 3-point roll cage, just like the other race cars at the event, they would not accept the typical roll bar hoop as the only protection. Both 914-6 GT cars were then sent to a local welder in town and that's how both of these 914-6 GT race cars ended up with the very same 3-point roll-bar reinforcement configuration! https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/133584005
Paul Ernst updated his Strahle 914-6 GT sometime in the 1990’s from a fixed welded attachment to a removable-type bar https://pbase.com/9146gt/image/133583914 in order to change the 914-6 GT to different configurations. During a recent restoration of the Ernst Seiller 914-6 GT, Simon Bowrey (current owner) also decided to change his GT to the newer design of the Strahle car copying the removable feature of this reinforcement modification.
