Opuntia humifusa

Roadside in Williamson County

Eastern Prickly Pear is the only species of Cactus native to Tennessee. The area around Nashville in Middle Tennessee is a region known as the Limestone Basin. The basin has a shallow topsoil with limestone just beneath the soil in most areas. In these rock outcroppings and gravel cedar glades is where these Cacti can be found though rare.
