Keep in mind environmental factors that impact micro environments. (1) Heavy clay wet soils have more freeze impact in the winter on the roots than to well drained soils. (2) Protection from prevailing Winter winds help boost Winter hardiness. Locations that offer better winter sun exposure (better southern exposure) also help with the hardiness.

Philadelphia should be a pretty solid USDA Hardiness 7B zone (5F to 10F). I think by the time you get out to Harrisburg you are in the 7A zone (0F to5F). Reading and Allentown fall into the 6B zone (-5F to 0F) and Scranton in the 6B zone (-10F to -5F) with northern areas in the 5s.

We have 1 crepe myrtle in our yard. We were told that only crepe myrtles with Indian names survive in a colder climate ~ is that true?
