At Burning Man 2005, I did a small art project of creating and distributing "Gifting Credit" cards made out of those annoying fake credit cards that so many of us get as junk mail each week. The start was really being mad about receiving this plastic that has zero use. Junk mail is one thing, but when you add a useless piece of plastic, thats just really wasteful. Burning Man exercises a "Gifting Economy" where transactions and value isn't based on money. Since our economy is so dependent on "credit", I thought how silly that notion would be at Burning Man. So with the help of my wife Lacey, we transformed the cards into one of a kind pieces of art and gave them to friends an strangers. My hopes were that it would inspire funny transactions, like if someone gave you a drink you could whip it out and say "you do take BurningMan Express, I don't leave camp without it!". Each card was different, but all had a face of some sort, cause I wanted each one to have some mojo, hopefully instilling a presence of true "voodoo economics". I used the icons of real credit card logos and made them Burning Man. The project was threefold, 1. Transformed this useless piece of plastic into art 2. Inspire dialog about the nature of Economics and the value of life and art 3. give a fun gift to participants. I plan on making more for next year and hope others will do the same. I'm always looking for more cards, so save them and send them to me.
