We left Marrakech in the early morning and drove through the day until we reached Ouarzazate where we stopped for the night.
The route through the Atlas Mountains was wonderful, with sweeping vistas on both sides of the road. I noted how the colour of the hills and rocks changed as we continued our journey, becoming almost red by the time we'd reached the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (at 2260 metres). Our lunch stop at the oasis of Ait Ben Haddou gave us a chance to view the old kasbah across the dry river bed - with more time, it would have been interesting to walk to it and explore, but alas, that wasn't possible.
