Long time since anyone posted a message here. We have a former olive factory at rear of our house. At some time (but don't hold your breath) it will become (take your pick) a play park, a park, a park with some started homes for youngsters starting out, an extension to the senior schools grounds, a park, some houses, etc. At the moment, Doggi would become overheated with the incredible array of subject matter. I posted one on my gallery some time back but literally, there are tons of subjects to suit his desires. Wires/cavles in España can be real eyesores - or eyedelights depending on your outlook, ao think I might have a go myself. When you come, Dave, you can see for yourself.

Like most people in this country I thought exposed cables were an eyesore (nasty and foreign as well) until Doggi's images opened my eyes to how much visual interest they add to cityscapes by the angles at which they intersect and the way they join buildings together in a sort of "spiders web". The really big uproar about electricity pylons was in the 1930's. Strange how people just don't seem to notice them anymore. Not surprising also that these uncompromising, angular steel forms were not welcomed in the land of the twee. Ye olde wooden pylons with rambling roses would have been more acceptable.

Britain free from visible cables! Never! Erections are all over the country carrying electricity and telephone lines. Good Lord - I even remeber, in quite recent years, a huge protest about pylons to be erected in an area of outstanding natural beauty - and the Electricity authority was forced to put the cables underground - probably the first sensible decision for years. However, anyone coming to Spain will find cables galore - so much so that anyone interested will have to cool their cameras from working so hard! From our sunny rear terrace, we have a wonderful view of the abutting former Olive Factory - to be redeveloped sometime (Mañana again!) but would provide a fantastic subject for Doggi-ites and would-be Doggi-ites. You'll see for yourself when you come here in Septembver, Dave - provided you can stay reasonably sober, it being the Fiesta Week, of course :-)

Dave, as an ex BR employee I can elaborate on two points about third rails: 1) Wrong leaves are the result of man-made intervention in nature. The reason so many trees exist in London is that they are the modified London Plane Tree. This was remarkable in that it could thrive in the smog. Unfortunately, the leaves never decay so they become like Banana skins on the rails and cost millions of pounds to be cleared away from our streets and parks. 2) The Gandolfi Bros were very happy about the third rail. The reason being that us photographers (plus surveyors, etc) had to buy their somewhat antiquated all-wooden tripods to avoid electrifying ourselves when working on the Southern region. If I ever get enough time, I will certainly check out Dungeness - just hope you have left the odd shot for me !

Doggi :because the Brits usually bury cables or hide them away there are not many examples of the creative cablers art in this country. Dungeness is different because it is a private nature reserve and there are some interesting installations to be seen. I always think that the daftest example of British cable-phobia was the decision to use a third live rail rather than the much more sensible overhead cable when the railways were electrified which comdemned generations of commuters to late and cancelled trains (wrong leaves on the rail etc).

Brian yes the strem shot was taken at the last meet not too long after the the By the Mill pic. I was a bit dissapointed with By the Mill in terms of the sharp focus of the leaves ect but the the effect and the mood was what I hoped to capture.

Another pair for comparison - the original colour and subsequent B+W. Obviously, an A3 print reveals a lot more detail than the file size will allow on this Gallery but at least you can follow the general pattern of working, as previously mentioned on the Members-Only Forum messaging area.

I write this from Spain on 11th August 2005 and am pleased that the Members Gallery is looking so interesting. I regularly check to view if any comments on individual images - hope authors keep an eye on their entries to see what's been posted and I also hope visitors will continue to post their comments. This area gives an opportunity to make comments on general aspects but can also provide a means to make a comment to cover several images by various authors if so wished, as that could prove to be easier than posting individual comments under individual images on their individual pages :-)

As promised, a small selection of images on the pbase members gallery from our village, Villaneuva del Trabuco, taken at night on Easter Thursday, showing the huge floats carried through the village by local men, who not only consider this a great honour but also have to pay to do it. Intense pain felt by all, both in body and pocket! The first float depicts Christ and the cross, the second the local Saint, the Virgin Dolores, complete with tears. On the following nights during Easter, the floats change but are still carried through the village, on a fairly long circular route, starting and ending at the church. I would estimate the distance to be about a mile and it takes about 4 hours, start to finish, with frequent stops for well deserved rests. I believe the Virgin's float needs 58 strong men to do the carrying - and the float carriers have to practice a lot beforehand, as steps have to be in complete harmony, so the floats sway from side to side as they progress. On the second night, women who have suffered a bereavement during the past year are dressed in black. Other women, with bare feet, walk in appreciation of their loved ones being well. A quick note on the picture-taking. Was from our front balcony, using the little compact Canon A85, set to ISO 400 and with the small built-in flash. Naturally, images are a bit "grainy" but I reckon they were quite good for the purpose. I had to boost them a bit in PhotoShop in terms of brightness and contrast but that was to be expected. In order they will show, first, a young woman, who is Mave's keep-fit tutor, so we got a nice smile when she spotted us on the balcony. Next is the float with the Cross, then a shot of the men at front of this float, followed by those at the rear. Then a shot of the Virgin's float and another of the men at the front of that. You may note several figures (there were a lot in the actual parade) wearing what seem to be Ku Klux Klan-type pointed hoods - with eyeholes - with dress all in white. This apparently symbolises the persecution of Christ. On the second day, the hoods are removed. As stated, the floats change daily - on one day with Christ lying down symbolising his death and on the next, his ascension and so on. Lots of bands, all playing apparently different tunes (well, some could hardly be called tunes - more like noise!) but all taken very seriously in terms of the whole festival and of course, being Spain, lots of emphasis on the involvement of children, many of whom happily bash on drums. As I write this, still another day to go, so looking forward to that. Next year I will be better prepared, so will expect to get better shots. One big festival is around 12th September and we have been informed it is fantastic. Olé.

Note that I shall soon be giving, step-by-step, clear instructions on how to remove (delete) images, as this seems to be the one area where contributing members (well, only a few) have some difficulty. Addendum: 16 shows view looking down on our street - 17 the house (appeared in NL) - the one with no car outside. The shot in village centre with all the men is fairly typical, when they aren't in the bars playing dominos!

I've added a few pickies around the village, including one of "Sir" without glass! These were taken with compact Canon A85 (my happy-snap camera) back in December, just before we moved into the house. Will leave them for viewing for a couple of weeks, before I bring in the new system, to limit uploads (=changes) to only over two days per month, so those with 56K modem access don't get put off by always awaiting the gallery to load. More details in due course.

Also, will replace my ones, for the moment with some local shots taken when we strolled around the village on first visit.

From geoffc. Doggi I recently went to celebrate a friends 50th in Berlin and looked at the architecture from a different veiwpoint after seeing your pictures posted on the gallery. With only 3 days to stay much to see my pictures were generally focused on the tourist bits, but from the small part that I was able to visit, it was enough to whet the appetite for a return trip. AS for the underground and S-barn compared to London it was a pleasant experience catching trains and buses that actually run on time.

Doggi, I keep coming back for another look at your Berlin - Moritzplatz. It features your usual unsettling "tilting upwards" viewpoint and the no-nonsense underground sign looks right in the industrial area. I am not sure what part the clouds and vapour trails play but they seem to add to the (characteristically!)disturbing mood of the image. Stick with it, I think you are on to something. Is the style of the Berlin Underground generally "no-nonsense"?

To respond to your August statement that "People have said to me that it can be hard work looking at a group of my prints" all I can say is that, I have always enjoyed hard work but do not include looking at your prints in that category. Colin, Thank you for sharing the delights of a day at the seaside in Tresaith with us. I particularly like Tresaith 1 with the decorated canoe, the ice cream hut, the part of a person carrying the indispensible folding chairs and a couple who seem to be saluting someone outside the picture frame. Are cardigans and braces de rigeur in Tresiath? Lovely - M Hulot's Welsh Holiday. What is an Onion Chmpionship? I guess size matters and flavour doesn't or perhaps it's the famous fighting Welsh onions? The entries look a bit odd but then North Wales is a very strange place.

Just a quick note - Ilike some of Doggi's work but I find it difficult. For all their faults humans are still an interesting subject as to me are desolate places . Overall I find Dave Tass's work very moving and exciting - , particularly Whitestable 2 and Girl at Tate which for some reason reminds me of Marcel Duchamps - The Large Glass. Photography is a wonderful medium - and as long as the subject / result is interesting to the taker - well thats the main thing .As regards different views in cities I wass going to try something in Dublin on the magnificient columns of some of the buildings there - the Old Parlaiment building / Trinity college etc . I was looking up at these views one morning without a camera- and soon people were staring at me as if - well what was I looking at - no matter .

Doggi's approach is most interesting, he is obviously the type of photographer who appreciates not only light but shapes:- rectangles, squares, triangles and circles. I remember him saying a few years ago, at Harlech, that if there was no "lead in" from the corner(s) of any his images he would not print them. I think that black and white is strong, look at a photograph on the first page of a newspaper - Black and White is graphic. Why use a viewpoint which 1001 other photographers may use, it's the different viewpoint which attracts attention. Doggi's approach renders his work personal, his own signature.

One of my main interest is in the (slightly) surreal. Surrealism is a very well worn path in photography , much less original than Doggi's cityscapes. An example is my pic "Whitstable Museum". I had wondered in out of the rain not expecting anything very interesting in this small municipal museum, but among the bits of Roman pots and old fishing gear I came accross this extraordinarily vibrant bust of a woman. It seemed to completely dominate the gallery. Juxtaposing it with two real women emphasises its powerful expression of femininity. Model is a similar image where the dress shop dummy is really alarmingly life-like. Unlike the Surrealists of the 1930's who wanted to tear a damned great hole in the fabric of reality I just want to make a small but disturbing pinhole.

Dave, I think your comment regarding ‘using existing buildings to create new cityscapes’ is pretty damned accurate. I think it has been a continuous thread through my work that I use existing material to create something new. It’s probably why I gave up landscape work - because I couldn’t bend it to my view of the world. Weston talked about revealing ‘the thing itself’ whereas I am more interested in making something ‘new’. With regard to the harsh lighting, it tends to look that way whatever the ‘reality’ of the prevailing light - because I always make it appear that way in the print. I have no interest in showing things how they are but rather how I envisage they should be. People have said to me that it can be hard work looking at a group of my prints. Somehow they want a rhythm to sets of images where they get a respite from the ‘full-on’ effect of sharpness, detail, contrast, geometry and the ever increasing balances between tiny parts of the image that reveal themselves over time. Well, I’m afraid, they wont get it from me because it’s not how I view cities. Also, it is probably the reason why I don’t like colour for my own work

Many people think the city is the greatest achievement of humankind so they are certainly worthy of study from every angle. I don't really believe photographers who claim that their compositions are purely instinctive and that they are unaware of their stylistic "signatures". I am pretty sure that Brandt knew that he tended to put the main subject at the edge of the frame and that he was teasing the interviewer. Your comments about up/down and front/back throws light on images like "Alexanderplatz". Your angle of view shows these buildings in a conjunction that their designers probably never envisaged. Your viewpoint also binds the buildings together in a strong geometric pattern. I think you favour relatively harsh lighting because it emphasises this geometric structure. In effect you are using existing buildings to create new cityscapes.

Dave, I am tempted to reply in the manner of Bill Brandt. When interviewed on TV, Bryn Cambell said to him "Mr Brandt, in many of your images the subject is towards the edge" and before he could finish, Bill replied "Are they ?". Seriously, I don't intentionally go in search of 'looking up' shots, but I am very interested in the animation of space and the interplay between the foreground and the background. The (ongoing) linear series came out of the way that I have photographed for a number of years. I like looking at things in a way that is different from others. There are plenty of very good photographers who depict cities at street level, humanity going about its daily business, war, suffering, the great vista of landscape, etc. I am more interested in this front/back - up/down relationship that you get in cities. Many friends who visit us are amazed at how much they miss in London by keeping their heads at eye level. Of course this could be self delusional bunkum but its the phase I am in. When I did landscape photography many of the images were made looking downwards. Some years ago I only ever shot in the city with a flash/daylight combination. Before that I used to re-stage scenes that I had observed with a slight twist. Maybe its my age !! or too many pints of London Pride (facilitates the upward view once it has induced the horizontal posture). What do you think ?? - I do know that a lot of people have said to me that they have never seen city space depicted in the way that it appears in my photographs. I would appreciate your and other members' thoughts.

Doggi, in almost all your Gallery images the camera angle is pointing upwards creating strongly converging verticals. This effect was inevitable in your "Linear" series which I much admired (still waiting for the book) but I wondered what was your thinking in adopting this camera angle for the other images?

Good to see an interesting selection. I must get some new ones up but somewhat strapped for time due impending move, with packing and so forth plus trying to produce Newsletter (almost there!). Have arranged next year's Meet - with suggestions (polite!) for meal arrangements and to set up use of Conference Room each evening for special events, as discussed. Will include session only on books, one on PhotoShop and another on members' prints - in addition to usual morning one, which can be freed for more presentation and discussion.

There are many photos on Gallery I would have liked to have taken eg VicR Derwent water 9 and 10 , Doggis Berlin UBahn . However I find Dave Tass's work has a wonderful energy to it altho the one of his I would like to have taken most is one of solitude ie Whitestable . However I would have cropped out the hoses and just left the lone figure and breakwaters to increase feeling of isolation . Jim Flavin[ comments from JF not Zone 8 which appeared in error ]

I have just arrived home, very late, and was tempted to view the Gallery again. I am pleased to see even more images, all looking very good indeed, including those from a fellow Digilux fan. I have different uses for each of my work tools. Is our individual quota likely to be increased in the future? I find that printing is very interesting but it is also most satisfying to be able to view other members work and to be able to share in the enthusiasm. Why hide our light under a bushel?

Hey - come on all you shrinking violets !!!!! - finally we are getting a fantastic selection of work on the site BUT (and I can see from the details on the website that lots of you are visiting very frequently) where are the comments. EVERYONE needs feedback to help them progress with their work but, in my case for example, the number of 'hits' is huge BUT the comments (YES, I really want your comments) numbers only two. Lets make this site REALLY successful by giving comments AND posting more work. Afterall, the images are what it is all about - isn't it ???????

Can I please ask all members to ensure they correctly title their images, as described in my TIL. Look at the way they are titled by myself, Doggi and DaveTass as examples. Note the sequence for the author's name, title, medium used and finally the title needs a number, in sequence, starting with 001 - so authors and I can keep check of how many posted per member. Also - IT IS IMPORTANT - ensure you insert a hyphen (see title examples already in gallery (I have altered some titles where the member did not use a hyphen, which meant the title did not word wrap and thus the images were pushed off to the right due wider spacing, requiring a scroll to see the RH column). Thanks. If your images end up in the INBOX and you do not know how to send them to the ZPS GALLERY just e-mail me and I will soon sort them for you. I shall be posting a revised, step-by-step instructional TIL soon as I want this gallery to be used by more members on a regular basis, especially as when we move to Spain, I shall have to rely more on individuals to post their images correctly, leaving me to only sort out those who get into real difficulties :-).

IMPORTANT: Can I please remind all posting images to put a reference to the process - like film or camera in their image titles - as I did ask for when the gallery was announced. Ideally, you will have some name reference, then an underscore then some abbreviated title and underscore then camera or whatever and underscore then finally, the sequential numbering, starting with 0001. Thanks - would appreciate it if future postings comply i.e. before we get too many variables.

SUGGESTION TO PARTICIPANTS: When you click on Thumbnail to see your own photo - why not put any message/comment about the shot in the comments for that image - like this, it's just below the title, on left. To see what I mean, check my tele-shot of Snowdon.

Yes! I thought the new car colour would mean that no one could see any changes as it deteriorated. Underneath all that, it's the latest RR (=not Rolls Royce - more like Rusty Reck!).
