Frank Woolworth, who paid for the building out of pocket, wanted his building to echo the British
Houses of Parliament, of which he was impressed. Cass Gilbert responded with the a neo-gothic
masterpiece. On April 24 1913, President Woodrow Wilson pressed a switch in the White House,
and the Woolworth was illuminated. It was christened the Cathedral of Commerce, and reigned as
the world's tallest building until the completion of the Chrysler.
