First Avenue, E42 to E48 Street.
In 1945, John D Rockefeller Jr purchased the 18 acre site and donated it to the city. An international
United Nations Board of Design, consisting of 10 architects, was formed in 1947 to design the complex. Among
them were Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Sven Markelius. The International style Secretariat, with it's glass
curtain-wall, was the first of its type in New York City, and influenced what was to follow.
