Sandra Veic Sukreski

In December of '91 the Croatian weekly Globus twisted my arm until I agreed to go to Beograd with writer Sandra Veic-Sukreski to do some stories. Sandra and I rode the train from Zagreb to Budapest and then to Beograd....we stayed with a reporter from Radio Hrvatska, a woman I'd studied with at the filozofski in Zagreb some 20 years earlier. Being in Beograd while the war was going full-on against Croatia was pretty interesting. I rented a car and drove to Vukovar, which had fallen about three weeks earlier. Sandra and I split up and she stayed in Beograd while I took the bus through Bosnia, which was still peaceful, back to Dalmatia.

Sandra, I'm sorry you do not feel flattered by the photo. I picked it because it reminds me of our wonderful trip to Beograd. We had fun and did some good journalism. - James
