OK, Collette was right. First I checked with local ranchers in San Luis Obispo, where I am temporarily. None of them use the term horseshoer. One cowpoke said "that's like calling a mare a 'lady horse.' First I looked in my Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, the standard reference most journalists keep on their desk. No such word! Then I checked the Oxford English Dictionary, the definitive source on the English language. No 'horseshoer' there either. So I've changed the word to farrier, which is the correct term. Also, I've learned to be more careful about language. I'll run to the dictionary when there's a question from now on!
