Inga making her mark

Presidio, San Francisco

This was shot at a race in the San Francisco Presidio in May, 1984. Inga Thompson had made a real impression with her win at Pinky's Road Race. I believe this race was sponsored by Bonnie Bell....and that it was considered to be important for Olympic selection. Cindy Olivarri won, Inga was second. After this race I called the top cycling magazine of that time and told them we had a new rider in Northern California and that she was going to make the Olympic team in her first year of competition. The editor I talked to told me that was ridiculous....it wouldn't happen. But it did. Can I spot em or what?

The woman framing the scenario for Inga is Liz Chapman, if I am not mistaken. Hard to make out who she is with her hand obscuring her face, but I'm pretty sure that is who it is. Another strong Nor Cal climber, Liz, as well as her husband Harlan who comes out of the woodwork once and a while to scare everyone.

Inga Thompson was from Reno, Nevada. At the time she started racing she was dating a guy in Santa Cruz. I was living and training there, and Inga would come on the local club rides. She would always keep up with the fastest men,and that year she made the Olympic team. She is a great person and a great rider.

I think she's from Davis or Sacramento. I used to know her name but I'm afraid the 60s are catching up with me. Eventually somebody will fill us in.
