The Coors Classic had come to San Francisco, and Greg Lemond was making his first homeland appearance since winning the Tour de France. But what's historic about this photo is Lemond is wearing Jim Gentes' new styrofoam helmet. Gentes said he was surprised to see Lemond in the new product, which he had apparently bought at a local bike shop. Notice how he covered up the Giro name. The race at Fisherman's Wharf was considered to be risky and Lemond wanted to protect his noggin. Now it is strange to see a bike racer without a good helmet.
