Brink attacks

Nevada City, California

Dave Brink attempted to burn Parsons off on the climb. As usual for Nevada City, it was hot that day. I can't remember what happened....but hopefully somebody who sees the photo will fill me in. Parsons won, but I forget the details. Dave Brink is carrying a spare tire and a pump, something you wouldn't see in modern times. You can just barely see the Berkeley bike license plate attached to his seat stays. It's hard to imagine descending the Nevada City hill with Mafac Racer brakes....but I used to depend on them myself.

These are such fantastic pictures to see. I worked with Dave Brink at Velo-Sport in Berkeley, as almost every accomplished rider did in the San Francisco Bay Area at some point in their career, and he always had sound advice and patience. It is great to see him in action.

Modern replacement pads that fit Mafac (slide them into the old holders) are available--though not just anywhere--and they will make the brakes quite credible and effective, as they were when new. Mafac Racer (and other models) are better than many recall--especially if one's most recent memory was based on hardened, squealing pads. They don't have to be that way!
