Thompson submachinegun

near Olovo

These two kids were supposed to be guarding the bridge against mischievous chetniks, but the Canadian Unprofor troops showed up with armor and real firepower. The US gave Yugoslavia weapons in 1948 when the split between Tito and Stalin gave the west a little hope. Thompson submachineguns were among the weapons. I met some Chetniks near Vukovar who said the Thompson was the best combat weapon ever, with the AK47 a distant second. This particular kid had three cartridges. .45 caliber ammo was not plentiful, a major liablity with the Thompson. Another American WW2 weapon seen a lot in the Yugoslav war was the 105mm self-propelled gun, still a really terrific cannon.

That particular thompson is a horrible combat weapon and it's liability isn't its lack of ammo...it's the lack of it's rear sight!
