Senator John Miller

Turanj, Croatia

Senator Miller was one of the first US government officials to visit Croatia during the war. He brought a sizeable entourage with him. Explaining the destruction is Frane Golem, the Croatian ambassador to the US. Miller learned a lot in his short visit. We went to a hospital where two soldiers who'd had their legs blown off cheerfully told him that what they really wanted was for the US to recognize Croatia. The Croatian government officials were generally ineffective at dealing with representatives of other governments. But the average guy in the street more than made up for it. This was actually a fairly dangerous spot, by the way.

I remember watching this conflict on the TV news when I was in junior high and high school. I never could really get a grip on what was going on. There were so many different sides and it was in a part of the world I didn't really understand.

Thanks to a Slovenian documentary on the war which I viewed recently and your photography with captions, I am beginning to understand.

If I recall, Croatia was given statehood early on not to long after Slovenia. That was a good thing I'm sure.

Thank you for posting your photos. They really have helped bring me some clarity of the reality of it all.
