There are 3200 people in Kotzebue so everybody gets called for jury duty about every two years. I had been eliminated because I "had written some bad things about the defendent in the newspaper" so I didn't get a chance to send the scumbag to jail in Nome for 20 years. But I did ask the pool that was selected to pose for a picture. In Kotzebue it is difficult to get a jury because so many people are related. At one jury selection the judge asked those in the pool to raise their hand if they thought they should be excused. One man raised his hand and the judge asked "why should you be excused?" The young man answered "Not only am I related to both the plaintiff and defendent, but I'm also related to you, your honor."
