1977?

Another pre-Giro night

Nearly all of these helmets were proven to be useless once the industry initiated testing. Jim Gentes introduced the Giro and it's been safe to whack your head ever since. The first time I crashed with a Giro on I couldn't believe it. I realized that in the past I'd been missing the experience because it was a lights out event. But with the Giro I felt like I'd fallen onto a big pillow.

I think testing revealed that the Skid Lid actually made the impact worse!

That is indeed Del Scharffenberg on the right. I don't know if the spelling is right either.

Ooops, I meant Reynolds 753

Robert and Ted followed by Auker, I think, with Sanders in background, then Randy Root and Bill Hawley. ??Del Scharffenberg (sp) on the right??

This is probably 1982. I am the rider on the left (with Ted Etter following and Glenn Sanders behind him). I was Oregon Road Champ in 81 and am in the jersey. The pink bike is a Merz 853. Jim Merz was the first US builder to be approved to build with the new tube set.--Robert Burney
