Dining room at Viktorija's

Nova Bila, Bosnia

Viktorija kept a popular small hotel in Nova Bila, near Vitez. It was home to the journalists covering the war in the Lasva Valley of central Bosnia and a neighborhood called "journalist street" grew up around it. On the left is Anthony Loyd, now a correspondent for The Times of London, then a struggling freelancer. His book "My war gone by, I miss it so" was about this time and place. Next is Alex, a young Canadian whose last name I never knew. He is best remembered for trying to out-drink a Scottish sergeant...with disastrous results. The next man I do not recognize. Then AP photog Dave Brauchli, and a reporter from the Washington Times whose name I have forgotten. It is odd that there are no women in the picture, as there were plenty of female writers and photographers. Perhaps they had grown weary of our company...

James -- Hope all is well up in Alaska. That is me on the far side next to the plant. I'd recognize me anywhere, in those knock-off clothes I had to buy in Split after being robbed. And the date is slightly off. I left Viktoria's for the last time in late June, early July of 93...Best, Mike Hedges
