Just a thought, after seeing a similar truck on the road today - the rear wheels are not in the air because the vehicle is stuck. The will have been raised manually. This option allows empty trucks to disconnect the rearmost axle from the engine, saving fuel and wear on the tyres. In this case, they will have tried doing this to raise the rear guard to miss slip. If the rear axle was lowered, the centre hitch would rise, and the rear would fall even further than it is in the pic. They needed better planning and a higher tide :)

After crossing to Bute for the day on the Big Ferry, I stopped here for lunch, slightly glum as I chose not to risk the Wee Ferry as all my cars were very low and had spoilers, so could not use the scenic route to/from Glasgow. The ferry remained deserted with no vehicles waiting either, so I asked if I could try driving on and off. The crew was really helpful, and I found that the larger Wee Ferry (compared to earlier version) had a much improved shallower ramp system, and there was actually no problem - and I was able to use it on my next trip, and new I was not going to stuck, or rip bits off my car.
