Originally much taller, intended to prevent gliders from landing. During WWII, many mainland fields were ploughed or otherwise mutilated or fitted with obstacles to deny their use as nice flat landing areas. Scalpsie was just one more option, large and flat. The outward neutrality of Ireland was also seen as a risk from the west, as it was considered Germany might use it as a staging post to invade Britain. Fascinating once you start to dig.
