I have heard that it was starved of water during the Summer, and was effectively killed off then. Dunno how true this is - but it certainly looks like a drastic wasy to try and save it

Between this and the mess out at Ardbeg Point, my childhood haunts are being wrecked.

i cant believe whats been done to the tree, i can remember it for over 65 years.
i think it is a spanish tree.

I know that I have said it before but the sailors used to sleep under this tree if they missed the last liberty boat. In nearly seventy years I have never known it to be cut back so severely.

I'd say whoever cut that tree have messed up big style.
It'll take years or decades to grow back to what it was, if it ever does.
Its always been one of the most memorable items holidaymakers see when they visit the town.
Finding it hard to get my head round.

The tree is Much older than me,hope they treat the ends before the next frost.

I hope that was necessary.I have been very fond of that tree for more years than i care to remember

That does not look good. That tree must be over 50 years old(that I know of) It has been there all of my life.

Jenny, certainly unusual but why do you say precious ? Is it a tree not normally found in these climes?
Crawford.

Ouch! I hope they knew what they were doing. That's a precious tree.
