Don't forget you are looking at today's ruins, not the complete feature. In the architect's mind was the original glazed structure, which was larger (longer, about twice the current length) than the remains seen today, and the space below, where there are stairs. The area below was also lit by skylights, which have been lost under the bitumen roofing material applied over them, and are the raised rectangular areas that can be seen in the pic. This restaurant area was requisitioned as the NAAFI during the war.

You'd have thought something could have been done with it over the years. Last time I remember the area getting used was Cadona's fairground and there was also speedboat trips(I think it was the fairground people that ran that) and water skiing on occasions too.
I know the west bay was never the warmest part of the Island but it seems such a waste of the place.

It's a weird structure, isn't it? Looks like some kind of pillbox to repel invaders. I know it overlooked the outdoor swimming pool and I've seen film of it in its heyday, but I do wonder what was in the architect's mind.
