The Mosaic Map of the Holy Land.

(This part shows the city of Jerusalem.)
The first to be discovered and still the most famous is the floor mosaic of the Greek Orthodox church of St. George, dating to the times of Justinian, where a sort of geographic map of the Holy Land is depicted, for the benefit of the pilgrims on their way to the Holy land.To be recognized in the surviving fragments are the cities of Jerusalem,Bethlehem, and Jerico,as well the river Jordan, lake of Tiberias and the Dead Sea.

It's quite moving to see the very map used so many centuries ago. The mosaic work is beautiful in color and form and the Greek letters so crisp and clear. Photos like this breath life into history.
