CHALLENGE - Sing me a Song

~ The Water Is Wide ~

The song album turned up with a heap of other music when our eldest daughter had a bit of
a clean out. The tune chosen here is an old British lyric song from the 19th century collection
of "100 English Songs".

The Water Is Wide
(L'Eau Est Large)

The water is wide, I cannot get over,
Nor have I wings with which to fly.
Oh give me a boat that can carry two,
We both shall row, My love and I.

I once leaned against a young oak tree,
It seemed as strong as my love seemed,
It bended and then it broke, you see,
My love was not the dream I dreamed.

I once put my hand in a rose-bush fair,
To take a rose I saw blooming there,
My finger was pricked right to the bone,
I should have left that rose alone.

The water is wide, I cannot get over,
There's no true love, at least not for me,
My love was untrue but I can't complain,
Some day I hope to love again.
